Artist Bassem Yousri will show his latest video work titled The Wardrobe Man at Zawya on 10 February.

Set in the area of West Jutland in Denmark, the artist documents a research mission about the life of a peculiar man. Æ Skawmand (the Wardrobe-Man, Kristian Vandet Jørgensen) was a hermit who lived in his wardrobe by the shore of Oddesund, Denmark, from 1917 until he died in 1956.

Yousri blends documentary will fiction as he looks into the relationship between geography, reality, history, and imagination.

He combines archival material with documentary and contemporary scenes to explore this mystery, which only grew stranger with each answer.

The Zawya screening will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Bassim Yousri is a multidisciplinary artist born in Algeria in 1980 and raised in Cairo, where he currently lives and works.

He received his BFA in painting from the School of Fine Arts, Helwan University in 2003, and his MFA in painting, drawing and sculpture from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia in 2009.

HIs work is often humorous as it criticises or questions social and political situations, while being concerned with the larger frame of the human condition.

In addition to six solo shows between Egypt and the US, Yousri participated in a number of group exhibitions. His work was shown in prominent international venues that include the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) in New York, USA; the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France; the Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE; Mathaf: the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar; l’Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, France; the State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich, Germany; and IVAM (Institut Valencià d’Art Modern) in Valencia; Spain.
