Christie's London announces Islamic Art Week auction

Islamic Art Week at Christie's London will auction off Islamic art splendors between 22 and 26 April

Dubbed "Islamic Splendors," Christie's of London will feature five sales from 22 - 26 April with a few hundred lots of Islamic and Indian art pieces.

The sale will include exquisite craftsmanship, works of art on paper dating back to the 9th century, Oriental rugs and carpets, among dozens of other lots.

22 April will witness the sale of the first part of the Saeed Motamed collection, which consists of over 600 art pieces. The second part of this collection will go on sale on 7 October.

"Saeed Motamed (1925-2013) started collecting art in 1953 and continued to do so until the late 1980s and early 1990s. The collection displays the depth and breadth of his knowledge of the artistic traditions of Iran, and the rest of the Islamic World," states Christie's official press release.

Comprising of over 200 lots Christie's will present a collection of Oriental rugs and carpets on 23 April. The sale is generated from a number of private collectors, including items from Geroge F. Farrow (1916-2001), one of the world's leading collectors of fine silk carpets.

A private collection donated to benefit the University of Oxford will take place on 25 April. The proceeds of the collection, which consists of 56 lots, will be used to "support curatorship at the Bodleian Libraries as well as a post in Sasanian Studies."

Christie’s sale of Art of the Islamic & Indian Worlds on 25 April will focus on the craftsmanship of works of art produced between the 9th and early 20th centuries. The collection will include over 200 lots of items from arts from India, the Ottoman era, as well as a number of highlights Egypt's 10th century Fatimid era.

The last day of the Islamic Art Week will present art works from property from the Bequest of Adrienne Minassian, to benefit Brown University in the Arts of Islam. Several lots from this collection portraying interiors will also be presented during Christie's sale in New York on 18 and 19 June.
