Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan scooped the top prize, the Golden Djed for feature films, at the third edition of the Luxor Egyptian and European Film Festival on Saturday.

Georgian director George Ovashvili’sCorn Island took home the Silver Djed, while British director Rob Brown's Sixteen won the Bronze Djed in the same competition. 

Meanwhile, in the short film competition, Egyptian director Omar El Zohairy's The Aftermath of the Inauguration of the Public Toilet at Kilometre 375 received the Golden Djed for short films.

The film is an adaptation of a short story by Anton Chekhov titled The Death of a Government Clerk, in which the Russian writer explores a life driven by fear. The film was selected for the Cinéfondation Competition at Cannes Film Festival this year, and is currently making rounds at international festivals.

Also in the short film competition, German entry The Chicken won the Silver Djed.

The jury gave special recognition to Noor El Sherif's performance in Cairo Time, Egyptian director Amir Ramses’ latest feature film after the documentaries Jews of Egypt and Jews of Egypt: The End of a Journey. 

Films from 17 countries participated in this year's edition of the festival, including scores from Germany, Austria, Italy, the United Kingdom and Spain, in addition to a selection of Egyptian films and a panorama of productions from Arab countries.

The Luxor Egyptian and European Film Festival launched in 2012 with the intention of promoting Egyptian and European cultural cooperation, in addition to reaching out to and including remote areas of Egypt in the cultural sphere, mostly dominated by Cairo and Alexandria.
