Following a successful first year, Zawya cinema and its mother company Misr International Films have announced the launch of a new venture, Zawya Distribution.

After the success of Zawya, Cairo's first real attempt at an arthouse cinema, the new company will focus on the distribution of independent and arthouse films in Egypt.

"With a mandate to reshape the distribution scene in a market predominated by commercial films, Zawya Distribution aspires to create a platform that caters to the ever-growing number of Egyptian independent films produced yearly. Through Zawya Distribution these films will receive a genuine chance at being released theatrically, on TV, on VOD and other forms of exhibition," Zawya's official press release announced.

While creating an alternative model of distribution, the company will remain alert to the dynamics of the local competitive market, providing a wide range of activities such as film festival consulting, distribution across different platforms, marketing and publicity.

The Zawya Distribution launch will be accompanied with a release of the award-winning films: Mother of the Unborn (Um Ghayeb), winner of the FIPRESCI award at Abu Dhabi Film Festival and the Pete Wintonick award at IDFA, Out on the Streets (Barra Fel Sharia), officially selected for Berlinale: FORUM Expanded, The Mice Room (Oddet El-Feran), officially selected for Dubai International Film Festival and Sao Paulo International Film Festival, and The Past Will Return (Gaye El-Zaman), winner of the Independent Shabab Foundation award at Luxor African Film Festival.

Launched in March 2014, Zawya is Cairo's first initiative bringing arthouse and alternative films to one screen at downtown Cairo's Odeon Cinema. Over the past months, besides regular film screenings, Zawya has hosted talks, special events, retrospectives, film discussions and master classes.
