Zawya art house cinema will be screening Carol between 9 and 15 March as part of a programme for the next three weeks that will show films that are winners or nominees of Academy Awards.
Starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, Carol is a story that involves lesbian relations. It centres on an aspiring photographer who develops an intimate relationship with an older woman going through a difficult divorce.
The story is based on Patricia Highsmith's 1952 semi-autobiographical romance novel The Price of Salt.
Though it didn’t win any Academy Awards, the film was nominated in six categories: Best Actress in a leading role; Best Actress in a supporting role, Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay, Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Costume Design, and Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score.
It was also nominated for five Golden Globes and eight BAFTA Awards.
However, it did win several awards at other festivals including the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where both Blanchett and Mara won for Outstanding Performance in leading role and supporting role, respectively.
At Cannes 2015, the Mara also won Best Actress, and the film was awarded the Queer Palm.
Carol also scooped awards at the AFI Awards, African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), Alliance of Women Film Journalists, Independent Spirit Awards, New York Film Critics Circle Awards, as well as five awards at the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (GALECA).
Starting 23 March, the documentary Amy, Oscar winner for Best Documentary feature, will be screened for a week.
The week after, beginning on 6 April, Zawya will screen the drama thriller Room, which earned Brie Larson the Best Actress Oscar.
Programme:
Carol will be screened from 9 to 15 March, at 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7:30 pm and 10pm
