Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won the Best Screenplay award for 'The Salesman' at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film centres around a couple who find their middle class intellectual life ripped apart after the wife is assaulted in her home in Tehran. They try to go on, notably playing in Arthur Miller's 'Death of a Salesman' at a local theatre.

After "A Separation," which won Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Oscars, Farhadi has plunged into daily life in a Tehran ravaged by real estate speculation.

"The oldest, the most ancient relationship in human history is the couple's relationship, the love relationship between a man and a woman," Farhadi told Reuters in an interview on Saturday before the film's premiere in Cannes.

Iranian star Shahab Hosseini won the Best Actor award for his role in the film.
