Veteran filmmaker Mohamed Khan has said it’s too early to make a film about Egypt’s ongoing revolution and questioned the motives of those who have already done so.

Documentary filmmakers, whether professional or amateur, are best placed to capture the revolution, expose media lies and awaken peoples’ consciousness, he said in a Tahrir newspaper column.

“Some filmmakers are infected with the virus of self-accomplishment and international recognition on behalf of the revolution,” he said.

Some international festivals accept any film that tackles the revolution, he added.

He described those filmmakers as tailors who make films according to current trends, and thus their unripe vision becomes a shallow commodity.

He also criticised films that had already been written or produced yet had scenes about the revolution inserted at a later stage in the belief they would generate more revenue.

Many filmmakers have strong feelings about the revolution and are waiting for the correct moment to express them in films that will provoke a mature vision and debate, he concluded.
