Film Independent initiative Global Media Makers (GMM) is looking to expand their network during the current Cairo Industry Days event held during the 40th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), which is running until 29 November.

Through partnership with the US embassy in Cairo, GMM is working in Egypt to fly promising emerging Egyptian filmmakers to the US for professional development programmes to promote their films in new markets in the US and learn more about their craft from American mentors and experts. The initiative also aims to create deep and lasting professional connections between the film communities of both countries.

"It is a great opportunity to be here in Cairo among all the filmmakers from the region and world. We have a lot of work to do in the upcoming two days," said Maria Raquel Bozzi, Film Independent's senior director of Education and International Initiatives, during a seminar held in Cairo's Semiramis intercontinental hotel on Tuesday afternoon.

GMM, who are marking their third year of the programme, have invited fellows, selected mentors and partners from the region and internationally to attend the two-day summit, giving them the opportunity to share their experience with the programme and expand their networks.

“Festival director Mohamed Hefzy has been a close collaborator for the last three years through our Global Media Makers programme. The Cairo International Film Festival is the perfect place to bring together our talented Middle East Fellows with esteemed American Mentors to celebrate the power of artists working across regions," she added.

Among dozens of attendees of the GMM fellows was writer and director Amr Salama, who has expressed appreciation and excitement for the initiative.

President of the Cairo International Film Festival Mohamed Hefzy has stated earlier that he has "always admired the great work that Film Independent and Global Media Makers have been doing in supporting Arab filmmakers, and we are proud to be hosting their summit this year at the Cairo International Film Festival."

Cairo Industry Days kicked off on Sunday and the program continues until Thursday from 10am until 5 or 6pm at both Al-Hanager Theatre and Cairo's Semiramis intercontinental hotel, where lectures, seminars and workshops are being held and are featuring a number of international cinema icons.
