Cairo's well-known art-house cinema Zawya has said it is suspending screenings and programmes starting this week as part of moves to combat the coronavirus.
Numerous independent cultural venues have also halted their activities, while the culture ministry halted activities at its affiliated institutions after a prime ministerial decree on 9 March banning large gatherings.
Cultural spaces “have a social responsibility towards their community,” read a Zawya press release, which said screenings have been suspended since Sunday 15 March.
Starting this week, the Egyptian government temporarily suspended all schools and universities.
The country has also halted all sports activities, imposed restrictions on the duration of prayers, and said it will reduce the number of public sector employees who are required to go into work.
