Still from Jean Rouch's and Edgar Morin's 'Chronicle of a Summer'
As part of its Meeting Points 7 exhibition, which opened on 9 February and will be running until 8 March, Cairo's Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) will be screening the highly influential 1961 French documentary Chronicle of a Summer on 17 and 19 February.
The film was a collaboration between filmmaker-anthropologist Jean Rouch and sociologist Edgar Morin, who interviewed a group of Parisians in the summer of 1960. Starting with the basic question "Are you happy?" the directors got a collection of diverse and fascinating answers, spanning numerous issues from the Algerian War to the problems faced by factory workers in the capital, and representing a wide array of the city's residents, including artists, immigrants and students.
Chronicle of a Summer is hailed by critics as one of the twentieth century's most significant works of cinema. It is a penetrative, avant-garde production that introduced the world to an unprecedented style of documentary filmmaking.
The film is 90 minutes long, and will be screened with English subtitles.
