Ibrahim El Batout’s independent, low-budget film Hawi is competing in the Valencia film festival, taking place from 7 April till 14 April.

It was screened on 11 April as part of the Mediterranean film selection.

The film has won the prize for best Arab film at the Doha Tribeca film festival and has participated in the Rotterdam festival in the Netherlands and the Al Fajr festival in Teheran.

It revolves around different individuals in Alexandria, who are loosely connected to one another. Its title is derived from a song by the local band Masar Egbary, whose members appear in the film as themselves.
