The El Masreyeen band, with Hani Shenouda, the founder and composer, along with lead singer Iman Younes, will be accompanied by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Orchestra, conducted by Sherif Mohie Eldin.
The band was established in 1977 and ‘was based on the simple, yet apparently revolutionary concept that it was possible both to sing in Arabic, thereby snaring wide popular appeal, and to do so to Western music, thus ensuring the devotion of several generations who were simply tired of what their parents listened to, but among whom for various reasons, European or American pop had not caught on’.
With Salah Jahin lyrics to several of their songs the band increased in popularity. However they disappeared from the Egyptian music scene in the mid-80s. After a 20-year absence the band made a comeback in 2009.
Saturday, 9 April at 8 pm, Bibliotheca Alexandrina Arts Centre
