The fifth Contemporary Dance Night (CDN) will take place at Cairo Falaki Theatre, presenting four performances throughout two consecutive evenings, on 28 and 29 November.

The annual event is initiated and organized by Ezzat Ezzat Contemporary Dance Studio.

Launched in 2011, CDN has two main goals: to familiarize the Egyptian audience with contemporary dance, and to act as a platform that helps dancers and choreographers to develop this art form.

As part of the project, choreographer Jamie Scott, member of the Merce Cunningham Trust, was invited Egypt for residency and workshop, giving classes to Egyptian dancers with Cunningham’s technique, cumulating in a performance in the CDN programme.

Mercier (Merce) Philip Cunningham was an American dancer and choreographer who was at the forefront of the American modern dance for more than 50 years, and is considered one of the most important choreographers of our time. According to Merce Cunningham’s website, he was active as choreographer and mentor until his death at the age of 90 in 2009.

In 1953, he formed the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and in 2000, he founded the Merce Cunningham Trust, with an aim “to preserve, enhance, and maintain the integrity of that choreographic and other artistic work, and make such works available for the benefit of the public."

In addition to the pieces from Cunningham’s repertory, guided by Scott, three Egyptian independently-produced dance pieces will be performed at this year’s CDN: Untitled Work in Progress by Jamie Scott, The Other I by Ezzat Ismail and Hazem Hader, and Stay Put by Nagham Salah.

28, 29 November, at 8pm
Falaki Theatre, 24 Falaki Street, Downtown, Cairo
