The first of its kind in the Arab world, the Alexandria Arab Theatre Festival for Specialised Institutes and Colleges took place between 3 and 8 December in Alexandria.
The festival included 10 troupes representing a variety of theatrical institutes from Egypt and Arab countries, including Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Oman, in addition to students from other colleges and/or specialised institutes who have theatrical practice within their curriculum.
The plays were performed at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which also hosted a series of workshops for young theatre practitioners. A series of panel discussions took place in the halls of the Grand Plaza Hotel.
According to the festival's president, the event aims at supporting the students choosing to follow the academic path — whether in art academies or within the artistic departments of many colleges — as well as to encourage others to consider this journey, whether within academic walls or outside.
