The Monodrama Cairo Days Festival kicked off on Saturday at the Cairo Opera House's Al-Hanager Theatre and will run until Wednesday 12 February.
At the third edition of the festival, which is named after actor Salah El-Saadany, 16 plays from 15 countries will compete for a number of awards.
The festival is also holding a number of theatre workshops given by international experts.
Russia is the event's guest of honour.
Egyptian actor Mohie Ismael is being honoured during the event for his impact on Egyptian theatre.
During the opening, the festival's founding chairman Osma Raouf expressed thanking to all local, Arab and international bodies that helped boost the event.
