Egypt’s culture ministry has agreed with the Artistic Creativity Centre that its popular play Qahwa Sada (“Black Coffee”) will be put on YouTube for the first time.
Qahwa Sada is one of the most successful that the centre produced via its Actors Studio.
Other plays produced by the centre to be released on YouTube include “Sallem Nafsak (“Surrender”), and Baad El-Leil (“After the Night”), among others.
The release of the Actors Studio’s plays on YouTube is part of the ministry’s “Culture Between Your Hands” initiative which aims to bring theatre performances, concerts and other cultural events to audiences amid the current shutdown of theatres, cinemas and concert halls due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Qahwa Sada will premiere on YouTube on 25 March at 9:30pm and can be viewed here
The Artistic Creativity Centre and the studio are managed by director Khaled Galal.
Qahwa Sada is among most significant achievements produced by the Actors Studio. The play saw great success and multiple reruns following its premiere in 2008.
Based on actor improvisation techniques that embrace many performers in several short scenes, comedic vignettes, dynamism and vibrant colours, this theatrical method became one of Galal's hallmarks, a style that he continued to incorporate in many of his productions with young talents.
Many of Qahwa Sada's actors have become popular in Egyptian theatre and cinema, including Mohamed Farrag, Amir Salah Eldin, and Hisham Ismael.
The play had a special rerun with the original cast on its 10-year anniversary during the 25th Cairo International Festival for Experimental and Contemporary Theatre in 2018.
