A Baghdad born director, Mokhallad Rasem, will present one of his plays in the International Salzburg Festival, which is taking place in Austria from 19 July to 1 September.

Rasem's participation in the festival takes place as Montblanc & Salzburg Festival Young Directors Project (YDP) presents a number of plays, where the best director will receive € 10,000 in prize money and an exclusive Montblanc Max Reinhardt Pen on 21 August.

Rasem is a resident theatremaker at the Antwerp’s prestigious Toneelhuis theater house, where he was introduced to other internationally acclaimed artists, such as Guy Cassiers and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

Different examples from his plays are Iraqi GhostMy Paradise, and Caligula. Now settling in Belgium, Rasem uses a wide range of languages to reflect his ideas, representing the diversity he experienced.

In the Salzburg Festival, he will present his work Romeo and Juliet with the Toneelhuis Company. The play features leading Belgian actors including Gilda De Bal and Vic De Wachter.

A universal theme, Romeo and Juliet, for Rasem, reflects different couples of lovers from various age groups of diverse cultural backgrounds, finding parallels and expressing the feelings of love in poetry, music and dance.
