Wed 18, 1-3pm: “Sharīa Texts: The Anthropologist as Reader”, a lecture by Bayard Dodge Distinguished Visiting Professor Brinkley Messick, professor of anthropology, Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies and director of the Middle East Institute at Columbia University. It develops a set of reading methods for the analytic study of shari`a-related writings, from source texts such as the Quran and the Sunna, to the literature of the doctrinal jurisprudence (fiqh), to court records and ordinary contract documents.
