Ahly Benghazi's Egyptian coach Tarek El-Ashry is a candidate to take the charge of Egyptian giants Ahly in the new season, a report in Egyptian daily newspaper Al-Ahram said.

Eight-time African champions, Ahly, were knocked out at the African Champions League last-16 stage after a stunning 4-2 aggregate defeat by Benghazi last March.

The defeat compounded the misery of Ahly who is also suffering at the domestic level, which is one of the primary reasons for the recent resignation of coach Mohamed Youssef and the appointment of caretaker, Fathi Mabrouk as interim coach until the season ends.

Seeing his club suffering from a severe financial crisis, Ahly president Mahmoud Taher recently stressed that the new coach will not be foreign, which could pave the way for El-Ashry’s arrival.

"Ahly Benghazi's coach Tarek El-Ashry is a prominent candidate for Ahly's job especially as the majority of board members support him amid these difficult financial circumstances. Ahly fans also support him." sources inside Ahly told Al-Ahram.

"There was a direct contact with El-Ashry from club officials asking him not to renew his contract with the Libyan club and wait until the end of the season," the newspaper added.

El-Ashry made his name in Egyptian football since taking the charge of Haras El-Hodoud where he spent seven years with the military club, helping them to clinch two national cups in 2009 and 2010, as well as the Egyptian Super Cup in 2009.

He took the charge of petroleum club ENNPI in May 2012 before departing for the Libyan club last summer.
