Ahly coach Fathi Mabrouk is pleased with the three points of the game against Ittihad of Alexandria in the 20th matchday of the Egyptian Premier League after beating the coastal side 2-0 on Wednesday.

The Cairo giants moved within touching distance of a place in the final mini-league phase after striker Amr Gamal inspired them to a 2-0 victory at Ittihad.

"The three points of the game are the most important thing as they give Ahly the lead of Group A," Mabrouk was quoted as saying on the club's official website after the game.

"I thank Ahly's players for their ability to reach the group lead," he added.

Ahly are now level on 33 points with leaders Smouha, but the former have a superior goal difference.

"The players' psychological state was behind the victory over Ittihad and topping the group," Mabrouk said.

The domestic competition – 22 teams divided into groups – is now in the 20th matchday, with a week left to determine which four teams will qualify for the mini-league.

Under the helm of interim coach Fathi Mabrouk, Ahly are seeking a spot in the mini-league that will determine the Egyptian Premier League champion.
