Ahly are likely to take part in the much-maligned Egypt Cup after skipping last year’s tournament, interim coach Fathi Mabrouk said on Friday.
“I very much welcome any decision from the board to play in the Egypt Cup,” Mabrouk, who took over at the club until the end of the season following the resignation of Mohamed Youssef, said on Ahly’s official website.
“Playing in the cup will benefit the team and give us a chance to try out some players.”
Ahly withdrew from last year’s edition over sponsorship conflict with the Egyptian Football Association. The tournament was won by Ahly’s arch-rivals Zamalek, who crushed Wadi Degla 3-0 in the final in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of El-Gouna.
The Red Devils are the record winners of Egypt’s oldest competition with 35 titles under their belt, 13 more than Cairo foes Zamalek.
