The competition committee of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), under the leadership of Amer Hussein, held the Egyptian Premier League mini-league draw phase in its headquarters on Wednesday.

Conducting the draw was Ahmed Hassan – the world's most-capped player, as well as a former midfielder with Egypt, Ahly and Zamalek and the Pharaohs' current team director.

The mini-league opener will combine the Cairo-based arch-rivals Ahly and Zamalek at Cairo's Air Defence Stadium on 28 June at 8:30pm.

The date of the match could present a conflict in terms of viewers, as it coincides with the last day of the Islamic month of Shaaban, or the first day of Ramadan, when Muslims fast from dawn until dusk. Muslims begin their Ramadan taraweh night prayers on the last night of Shaaban. Also, the round of 16 kicks off in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup on the same night.

Egypt, who failed to qualify for the World Cup, has been permitted by FIFA to continue its domestic competition, which is being held behind closed doors due to security concerns.

The Egyptian Premier League has been forced to abort two successive seasons, with the first in February 2012 following violent clashes at a Port Said stadium that killed 72 Ahly fans.

The current edition has been held in a two-group format, with four teams qualifying for the mini-league phase – Ahly and Smouha from Group A and Zamalek and Petrojet from Group B.

The full draw results are as follows:

Round 1: 28 June
Ahly vs Zamalek (Cairo's Air Defence Stadium)
Smouha vs Petrojet (Ismailia Stadium)

Round 2: 2 July
Zamalek vs Smouha (Cairo's Air Defence Stadium)
Petrojet vs Ahly (Alexandria Stadium)

Round 3: 7 July
Ahly vs Smouha (Cairo's Air Defence Stadium)
Zamalek vs Petrojet (Alexandria Stadium)
