Abdoulaye Cisse could join Zamalek for another stint as a deal is only subject to the club agreeing to the Burkina Faso striker's personal terms.
Having failed to score in their last two Champions League games at home, Zamalek could now be looking to secure the services of Cisse to bolster their misfiring frontline.
"I didn't request any further signings, but if we could bring in Cisse – for sure I would welcome that," newly appointed Zamalek manager Hossam Hassan said in the Vita Club post-match news conference.
"I have great strikers in my squad, if we sign Cisse that would be great – if we fail, I'm already satisfied with the attackers."
Zamalek, who crashed out of the Champions League group stage after slumping to a 1-0 home defeat to Congo's Vita Club, already have Ahmed Ali and Khaled Kamar upfront, but the international duo failed to find the net against TP Mazembe and Vita Club.
The highly rated Ali, signed from Ismaily last season, looked particularly dull in front of goal – wasting a penalty against Mazembe and gilt-edged chances in the two continental fixtures that were enough to keep Zamalek's chances of a semi-final berth alive.
Newly signed Kamar has yet to prove his credentials at his new club – he is guilty of spurning some clear-cut chances, including a laughable acrobatic effort in front of goal against Vita.
With the White Knights waving goodbye to the Champions League, a competition they last won in 2002, they may find themselves in need of another reliable frontman after ditching Ahmed Gaafar and Arafa El-Sayed this summer.
Ahly Tripoli striker Cisse, who enjoyed an impressive one-year spell at Zamalek before leaving in 2013 following disputes over unpaid wages, could be the suitable addition as he is also believed to be keen on a return due to the current political turmoil in Libya.
Having already filed a complaint against Zamalek because of some late dues, the Burkinabe international will only join should the club agree to his financial demands.
"Cisse set his return on receiving the same sum he used to earn at Zamalek during his first spell, plus being paid his late dues," Cisse's agent said in media statements.
"He agreed to join Zamalek on a two-year deal. He wants to be paid $500,000 in his first season with an annual increase of $50,000 should he stay beyond the second season.
"Cisse is keen to return to Zamalek due to the suspension of the Libyan league, in addition to his good relationship with manager Hossam Hassan."
Cisse, 30, managed to score nine goals in 22 appearances for Zamalek in his previous tenure.
Should Zamalek land Cisse, he will be the fifth striker in the Cairo side's attacking department, which boasts Ali, Kamar, Bassem Morsy and highly rated youngster Youssef Ibrahim 'Obama'.
