Egypt coach Hassan Shehata has recalled Ahly’s goal keeper Ahmed Adel Abdel-Moneam to replace Zamalek’s injured Abdel Wahed El-Sayed ahead of the crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against South Africa on 5 June in Cairo.
“Abdel Wahed El-Sayed suffers from a knee injury and will not join the training camp that will start today in Ismailia. Ahly’s goal keeper Ahmed Adel Abdel-Moneam will be his replacement,” the Egyptian Football association (EFA) revealed in a statement on its official website on Saturday.
Abdel-Moneam is yet to join the training camp alongside his teammate and Captain Ahmed Hassan when they arrive Cairo today after playing a friendly with Kuwaiti Al Salmiyah on Friday.
Saudi Al Hilal on-loan striker Ahmed Ali is the only absentee from the Pharaohs’ 24-man squad as he will join them on Sunday.
Egypt, who lay in the at the bottom of the Group G table with a single point behind South Africa (seven), are in a must-win situation to keep their hopes for playing in the finals, hosted in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
