Italy playmaker Andrea Pirlo joined Major League Soccer club New York City FC from Juventus on Monday, little more than a month after winning a fifth consecutive Serie A title.

Pirlo spent four years at Juventus after joining from Serie A rival AC Milan, and helped it to the Champions League final this year. Juventus lost to Barcelona, missing out on a treble after winning the Italian Cup and the league title.

''It's difficult to put what I feel into words, especially as it involves four such important years of my life,'' the 36-year-old Pirlo wrote on his official Twitter account. ''I can only say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has accompanied and supported me in this adventure ... A heartfelt thanks to all of you.''

Pirlo has won the Italian league six times, including in each of the past five seasons, as well as the Champions League twice. He also helped Italy to the World Cup title in 2006.

''It has been an honor and a privilege to have shared these four fantastic seasons with Andrea and all associated with Juventus Football Club wish him the very best for the future'' Juventus said at the end of a lengthy statement. ''Thanks for everything, Maestro, and good luck.''
