Roma coach Rudi Garcia praised winger Mohamed Salah for his performance during the team's 2-1 Sunday win against his former club Fiorentina, which sent Roma to the top of Serie A.

“Before the game I spoke with him [Salah]. I always speak with my players. I wanted to make sure that he was calm and he actually was,” Garcia told Premium Sport.

The Egyptian scored the first goal but minutes before the final whistle, he made a foul that led to two yellows in a few seconds after objecting to referee Daniele Orsato's first decision.

“The only negative point [for Salah] was the red card, which I think was very harsh. True, he didn’t have to make that gesture, but he does not even speak Italian. He didn’t say anything,”

Whistling every time he touched the ball at a packed Artemio Franchi stadium, Salah reminded fans what they are missing after just seven minutes when he put the visitors ahead with a fine opener.

“Salah has been suffering from insults for several days, if that incident deserved a red card then many others deserve one, too. However, on the psychological level, Salah was smart to not respond to the [Fiorentina fans’] whistles,” he concluded.

Fiorentina dropped one place to second at two points adrift with Inter Milan, held to a 1-1 draw at Palermo on Saturday, sitting third, also on 18 points.

"Salah played his game under a lot of pressure. It wasn't easy for him, or for Gervinho, to defend on the flanks and then go on the counter, but they did it very well," Garcia concluded.
