Former South Africa striker Benni McCarthy has revealed that Ajax Cape Town could be an option in order for him to return home and stay with his family and mother.

The 33-year-old striker trained for the first time with Ajax on Thursday after being released by West Ham at the end of the last season.

“This is where I learned my trade and it's the place that made me the person who I am today. I had a nice adventure in Europe, but I would consider moving back home because this is where I feel still very loved, and obviously my mom and family is home," McCarthy told reporters after the training session.

The former West Ham, Blackburn and Porto striker has seen his career going downhill and seemed desperate to relaunch it. But now he has revealed that he has new target.

"There was a period where I lost that passion for football a little and got distracted. Just now I saw the fun side of football again, and it's probably because I'm home in Cape Town and the sun's shining in the middle of July. I'm going to train for a week with them, and if I still feel that this is what I want to do then who knows what might happen," he said.

Finances may block the deal, but McCarthy is ready to make sacrifices. "I've earned a nice living throughout the years, so for me it's not really about the money. It's about wanting to enjoy myself and I think I can enjoy myself if I come back to Cape Town."

"My mom is here, and that's probably the biggest thing in my head. I've been away 15 years, which is almost half my life," he added.
