Squash: Eleven Egyptians reach World Championship round of 16

Six men and five women will be representing Egypt in the round of 16 at the prestigious squash World Championships

Eleven squash players will be representing Egypt at the World Championship individuals round of 16 matches, to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday in Manchester.

Champions Karim Abdel Gawad and Nour El-Sherbini kept their title defence campaigns alive, reaching the round of 16 on Monday. El-Sherbini is aiming to win a third consecutive accolade, having triumphed in 2015 and 2016 in Malaysia and Egypt respectively.

For the men, Mohamed Elshorbagy, Ali Farag, Marwan Elshorbagy, Rami Ashour and Tarek Momen also went through to the next round.

Meanwhile, the women's contest saw Raneem El-Welily, Nouran Gohar, Nour El-Tayeb and Salma Hany progressing alongside El-Sherbini.

There will be an all-Egyptian early final in the round of 16 between world number two Mohamed Elshorbagy and three-time winner Ramy Ashour.

ElShorbagy, winner of two British Open titles, is eyeing his maiden World Championship triumph, having lost to compatriot Ashour in the 2012 and 2014 finals.

The likes of Abdel-Gawad and Ashour are likely to face stiff competition from usual challengers Nick Matthew of England and Frenchman Gregory Gaultier.

Earlier in December, Egypt won its fourth Men World’s Team Championship title.
