Ahly's first-choice goalkeeper, Mohamed El-Shenawi, is confirmed to be sidelined for three weeks, while Moroccan striker Walid Azaro could be available for Tuesday’s Premier League match against Arab Contractors despite injury.
“Scans revealed that El-Shenawi has picked up a muscular tear that needs a rehabilitation programme for three weeks,” Ahly’s doctor Khaled Mahmoud was quoted as saying on the club’s official website Sunday.
Shenawi came recently under fire after conceding a goal in Thursday’s 1-1 draw against UAE's Al-Wasl in the Zayed Champions Cup, causing the Red Devils’ exit from the tournament with the away goal rule as the first leg finshed with 2-2 draw in Cairo.
The elimination from the Arab championship came to add more woes for the Reds, less than two weeks after losing the African Champions League final to Tunisia's Esperance in Rades.
Ahly terminated the contract of French coach Patrice Carteron a few hours after the Zayed Cup exit, promoting assistant coach Mohamed Youssef to the position of caretaker manager.
Shenawi’s injury will add more pressure on Ahly’s caretaker boss Youssef as the team will continue missing key right-back Ahmed Fathi and defender Mohamed Hani against Arab Contractors due to injuries.
Moroccan striker Walid Azaro is also suffering from a foot injury, but he could be available for Tuesday’s match.
“Azaro will undergo a medical test Monday to determine his availability for the Arab Contractors match,” the club doctor explained.
Holders Ahly currently lie at the bottom of the Premier League table with 11 points from just six matches as they postponed 11 games. The club is 18 points behind leaders Zamalek who have played 12 matches.
