Egyptian Premier League club Pyramids FC continued their January spending spree after signing Peru midfielder Cristian Benavente, the club's Saudi owner Turki Al-Sheikh announced on Tuesday.

Al-Sheikh, the former Saudi sports chief, did not disclose any financial details.

"The signing of Peru's national team player Cristian Benavente is completed," he said in a post on his official Facebook page.

The 24-year-old arrived from Belgian side Charleroi, where he had been playing since 2016. He is Pyramids' seventh winter signing as the club continue their policy of making mega deals to challenge for the Egyptian Premier League title.

Benavente, who came through the youth ranks of Real Madrid and played for their B team, has earned 16 international caps since making his Peru debut in 2013, scoring two goals.

Pyramids have also recently signed Ecuador striker Jhon Cifuente, Syria frontman Omar Kharbin and Burkinabe winger Eric Traore.

The club lie second in the league table with 38 points, three behind leaders Zamalek who have three matches in hand. Both sides meet in a top-of-the-table clash on Thursday.
