Egypt's Zamalek will be looking to make a statement of intent when they open their CAF Confederation Cup group stage away to Kenyan side Gor Mahia on Sunday.

The White Knights are fighting on three fronts as they enjoy a superb run of results that raised the expectations of their fans.

They have won nine and drawn one of their past 10 games in the Egyptian Premier League to maintain their position on top of the table, producing some vivid attacking displays in the process.

In the Confederation Cup, Africa's secondary club competition which they are seeking to win for the first time, they demolished CotonTchad 7-2 on aggregate before overcoming Morcco's Ittihad Tanger with a 3-1 aggregate win to qualify for the group stage.

"The Confederation Cup is the strongest at the African level this season," Zamalek coach Christian Gross said at the pre-match press conference on Saturday.

"We need 10 points to reach the next round. Sure, we want to win all the group stage matches even if we ensure our qualification early."

Zamalek were drawn with Gor Mahia, Angola's Petro Atletico and Algeria's NA Hussein Dey in Group D of the Confederation Cup.

"It's difficult to speak about the rivalry between the teams in our group before playing the first three matches," Swiss boss Gross added.

"I respect the players of our Kenyan opponent, especially as they are strong on the physical level. All the matches will be difficult and need much effort."

Zamalek have no serious injury worries ahead of the game but key left-back Abdallah Gomaa is doubtful due to a minor complaint.
