Zamalek’s league game against Ismaily at the Cairo Stadium was abandoned following the end of the first half, after clashes in an earlier match in Port Said between Masry and defending champions Ahly left dozens dead and hundreds injured.

Upon the cancelation of the match, the outer part of one of the 74100-seat Cairo Stadium’s four stands caught fire because of an electrical short circuit. Other reports suggested the blaze might have started as a result of fireworks that went wrong.

Fire brigade trucks rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire as no human losses were reported.
