DR Congo coach Mutubile Santos expressed his delight at winning the bronze medal in the friendly Nile Basin tournament following their deserved 1-0 win over Kenya on Monday.
“I was hoping to compete for the gold medal, but I am satisfied with the bronze. Our experience helped us a lot to overcome the Kenyan team whose performance was getting better since the beginning of the tournament,” Santos was quoted by Al-Ahram on Tuesday.
Seven players from the CAF African Champions League winners TP Mazempe were in the The Leopards squad for the tournament.
“TP Mazempe players played a prominent role in our progress. I am very happy to be playing in this tournament as we gained more confidence and experience before participating in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Sudan next February,” added Santos.
On the other hand, Kenyan tactican Zedekiah Otieno affirmed that his junior players’ lack of experience was the main reason of the defeat against DR Congo.
“Playing in the Nile Basin tournament was a good opportunity to give the new players good experience as they played against big teams like Egypt, Sudan and DR Congo,” Otieno told Al-Ahram.
