Barnsley’s new signing, Ahmed Hossam "Mido" is confident that he will be physically ready for the new season, despite looking overweight in his first game with the English (Championship) second-division side.
The Egyptian striker made his debut in Tuesday’s 2-1 away defeat to Alfreton Town in a pre-season friendly, but was heavily criticised in his homeland for failing to lose weight after leaving boyhood club Zamalek.
"I’m confident I’ll be ready for the start of the season. It’s all about getting match fitness," Mido was quoted as saying by English paper Sheffield Telegraph.
"I’ve been putting in the right work for myself and the club. I’m sure in the next couple of weeks I’ll get better and better physically."
Mido, 29, is trying to resurrect his once-glittering career in Europe, where he enjoyed successful spells with clubs like Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham Hotspur.
He left Zamalek in the summer after falling out with the club’s chairman over unpaid salaries.
