The Ultras Ahlawy, hardcore fans of Egypt's Ahly football club, stepped up their protests against alleged football corruption on Tuesday, storming Cairo's Media Production City (MPC) to protest against controversial television channel Modern TV.

In their chants, hundreds of angry demonstrators singled out Medhat Shalaby and Ahmed Shobeir, two television presenters known for their frequent anti-Ultras comments.

Neither of the two presenters was present at MPC during Tuesday's disturbances.

Notably, Shobeir's daily television programme, which normally airs at 6pm Cairo time, was cancelled on Tuesday.

Security forces, meanwhile, closed down the studios of both Modern TV and Ahly's official television channel – both of which are located in the MPC – on Tuesday afternoon. The angry supporters left after few hours.

Ultras Ahlawy have released a song on Monday to mock several TV presenters, whom they believe are relentlessly trying to tarnish their image, including Shalaby and Shobeir.

The latest escalation by the Ultras comes only days after the group stormed Ahly club headquarters in Cairo's Nasr City district, where they engaged in minor scuffles with players.

Ahly has been holding its training sessions in Nasr City after its usual venue in the capital's Gezira district was stormed by angry Ultras Ahlawy members early this month.

Fans also attacked Egyptian Football Association (EFA) headquarters in an unprecedented wave of violence on the part of the country's soccer fans.

They demand that all domestic football activity be suspended until the perpetrators of February's Port Said stadium disaster are brought to justice.

The EFA is currently planning to launch the new Premier League season on 17 October after the previous edition was called off in the wake of the Port Said tragedy, which left over 70 fans dead.

Ahly played Egypt's first competitive game since the disaster, defeating ENPPI 2-1 in the Egyptian Super Cup – the season's annual curtain-raiser – on 9 September.

The match had been preceded by threats by the Ultras Ahlawy to storm Alexandria's Army Stadium, but the group backtracked on the decision only hours before kick-off.
