Ahram Online compiles a list of the six matches that pitted Cairo rivals Ahly and Zamalek against each other in the elite African Champions League

Zamalek vs Ahly

Zamalek 1-2 Ahly, 25 September 2005 (semi-final first leg)

A formidable Ahly side were firm favourites to overcome Zamalek and they looked to be cruising to a comfortable victory when striker Emad Meteb put them ahead eight minutes before the break with a fine curling shot from inside the area in the away leg.

Veteran midfielder Mohamed Barakat, who has recently announced his retirement from professional football, doubled the lead on the stroke of halftime to make matters worse for their ailing Cairo neighbors.

Playmaker Hazem Emam, a Zamalek icon, pulled one back on 74 minutes with a low shot from inside the area after a goal-mouth scramble but it was too little, too late as Ahly secured a comfortable first-leg advantage.

Zamalek were outplayed in the second leg as Ahly claimed another easy victory to reach the final.

The lively Barakat opened the scoring four minutes past the hour mark when he latched onto a through pass from playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika to fire into the roof of the net.

He wrapped up the victory on 73 minutes with a precise low shot from inside the area.

Two matches: Zamalek 1-2 Ahly, Ahly 2-0 Zamalek

Ahly 2-1 Zamalek, 20 July 2008 (group stage)

Both sides clashed in their first Group A game, with Ahly gaining the upper hand after Angolan striker Flavio Amado gave them a first-half lead with a first-timer after making the most of a cross from compatriot Gilberto.

Gamal Hamza briefly leveled the score with a powerful shot from the edge of the area in the 62nd minute but midfielder Ahmed Hassan found the net four minutes later to give Ahly an opening group-stage victory.

Zamalek 2-2 Ahly, 14 September 2008 (group stage)

Everything had already been settled by the time they met in the penultimate Group A game – Ahly had ensured their progress and Zamalek lost any hopes of booking a semi-final berth.

Looking for a mere morale-boosting win, Zamalek fell behind after nine minutes, thanks to a trademark header from Flavio whose aerial prowess defined his four-year spell with the Red Devils.

Gamal Hamza fired into an empty net after a clever dummy to restore parity four minutes before the interval and Ghanaian striker Junior Agogo put them ahead on 51 minutes with an angled shot.

However, Zamalek were denied a win in the 70th minute when classy playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika beat the keeper with a precise low shot with the outside of his right foot.

Zamalek 0-1 Ahly, 22 July 2012 (group stage)

Yearning for their first Cairo derby victory over Ahly in five years, Zamalek were once again haunted by Mohamed Abou-Treika.

In a dour match played behind closed doors due to security concerns, the veteran playmaker notched the winning goal with 11 minutes remaining. He took advantage of some slack marking to rise unmarked and head home a right-wing cross.

Abou-Treika took his tally against Zamalek to 11 goals to become the Cairo derby all-time leading scorer.

Ahly 1-1 Zamalek, 16 September 2012 (group stage)

Already-qualified Ahly achieved their aim of avoiding a tricky semi-final tie against then holders Esperance when they salvaged a draw with Zamalek despite trailing to a first-half goal from diminutive attacking midfielder Mohamed Ibrahim.

Ibrahim superbly skipped past two Ahly defenders in the area to curl a low shot into the bottom corner two minutes before the interval but Mohamed Barakat secured a share of spoils on 62 minutes with a fierce drive that went in off the bar.
