Ahmed Hassan is grateful to coach Manuel Jose
Ahly’s veteran midfielder Ahmed Hassan paid tribute to coach Manuel Jose for keeping faith with him after he picked up a serious knee injury last year.
The Egypt skipper ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament during an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone in September, an injury that sidelined him for around seven months.
His presence was sorely missed as the Pharaohs continued to stumble in the qualifiers and Ahly’s midfield lacked his energetic and lively displays.
Hassan made his first competitive appearance this season after coming on as a second-half substitute in Ahly’s goalless league draw with Masry last month.
“Jose motivated me to return in a good shape. His encouragement was pivotal in helping me recover from that injury quicker than expected,” Hassan said in an interview with Ahram's Arabic Online.
“He used to tell me that he needed my services, and thus I felt that my presence is important. I consequently became determined and motivated to return to action as soon as possible.”
Portuguese tactician Jose returned to Ahly in January to lead them for a third spell following two hugely-successful stints at the helm.
He brought Hassan to the Red Devils in the summer of 2008 during his previous tenure, and the former Anderlecht man repaid his faith with a series of fine displays.
Hassan’s contract with Ahly runs out at the end of the season amid speculation that he could make a shock move to arch rivals Zamalek.
“What is written regarding that matter it totally untrue. I did not engage in any talks with Zamalek over a possible move,” the 36-year-old said.
“I’m not in a hurry to extend my Ahly contract. I will study their offer carefully before making my final decision,” he added.
Hassan won with Ahly two league titles and one African Champions League accolade among other triumphs.
