The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has postponed the Cairo Derby between Ahly and Zamalek to the end of the season for security reasons.

“Cairo Derby, week 30 match is rescheduled to 11 July until further notice,” EFA spokesman Azmy Megahed told Ahram Online.

The interior ministry made an official request to the EFA to delay the most important game in the Egyptian Premier League, which was set to be held on 29 June, to the end of the season due to recent major difficulties in securing the stadiums.

The Egyptian police hasn’t been fully operational since the January 25 Revolution that ousted former president Mubarak and has recently been unable to ensure security in Egyptian stadiums.

The domestic competitions have been delayed for months before confrontations occurred after they resumed, from the use of dangerous fireworks to full pitch invasion.

To make matters worse, Ultras Ahlawy and Ultras White Knights, the ardent groups supporting Ahly and Zamalek, took part in the 18-day demonstrations against the government and are playing a cat and mouse game with the interior ministry – chanting against them and occasionally clashing with them before the stands’ gates.

Cairo Derby might be the champion-decider this season as the league leaders, Zamalek, are only three points ahead of the title holders and runner-up Ahly.
