Ahly’s broadcasting dispute with state TV unresolved ahead of league game

Ahly may opt not to allow the broadcasting of their second successive home game in the Egyptian Premier League over a dispute with Egypt’s state TV, local reports suggested on Saturday.

The Red Devils, who are struggling domestically this term, fell out with the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) over unpaid dues.

The ERTU did not comment on Ahly’s repeated complaints, prompting the club not to air their 5-0 drubbing of lowly Assiouty Sport earlier this month.

With the issue still unresolved, the team’s next league game to home to Arab Contractors on Monday might not be broadcast, according to Egyptian reports.

Egypt’s state television purchased the broadcasting rights of the 2014-15 league season in late 2013, paying LE70 million in a deal that did not get the approval of Ahly, who initially sought to sell their rights individually.

Sports television channels suffered dearly because of the cancellation of two successive Premier Leagues in 2012 and 2013 due to the country's political turmoil. Most of them were shut down after incurring huge losses.

Ahly, who are seeking to equal their own record of winning nine league titles in a row, lie third in the table with 46 points, eight behind leaders and arch-rivals Zamalek with 15 matches to go.
