Ahly summer-signing Saleh Gomaa has been handed Mohamed Abou-Treika's No 22 shirt, becoming the first player to inherit the revered jersey since the retirement of Egypt's Ahly star in 2013.
Talking to Ahly's official website, Gomaa – who signed a five-year deal with ENPPI for LE 7million – admitted he realizes the huge responsibility put on his shoulders by taking up Treika's iconic shirt, but says he is up to the challenge.
"I chose shirt No 22 shirt since I love Abou-Treika," Gomaa, 21, told Ahly's official website.
Gomaa spoke about the U-23 Egypt team, who almost guaranteed qualification for the African Championship in Senegal after securing a first-leg 4-0 win over Uganda in the qualification final phase.
The top three teams in the U-23 CAF Championship make it directly through to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Brazil.
"The U-23 team are capable of qualifying for the Brazil Olympics; we're just one match away from making it to the final phase (African Championship)," he added.
"Regarding the first-team, new manager Hector Cuper is capable of getting Egypt back to its normal place. He knows well how to deal with the players psychologically."
Gomaa had a brief loan stint at Portugal's National, where he managed to score two goals in 30 appearances the last season.
