Sudan’s Al-Hilal Elobeid struck at death to down Smouha 2-1 at El Abyad Stadium on Tuesday, denting the Alexandrians’ CAF Confederation Cup last-eight qualification hopes.
After going one goal down, courtesy of an Abo Baker Girfa effort in the 72nd minute following a blunder from keeper Mohamed Abo-Gabal, Islam Mohareb managed to bring Smouha level with a powerful strike six minutes from time.
Smouha, however, were not to come up with an away draw after Ghanaian midfielder Nelson Ladzagla capitalized on some shambolic defending inside the visitors’ box to give his side the winner, following a corner kick in the last minute of stoppage time.
The defeat condemned Moemen Soliman’s side to last spot of Group C on four points, with Hilal moving top with seven.
With just two games left, Smouha entertain Zambia’s ZESCO United late in June before visiting Angola’s Recreativo just a week later.
