Ahly records

Champions Ahly won the title for a third straight season, setting several records in the process.

The Red Devils garnered 88 points for the biggest ever point tally and became the most prolific team in the history of the competition after racking up 75 goals, surpassing the previous 71-goal record of Tersana which they set in the 1963-64 season.

Ahly also recorded the biggest number of wins in a single season with 27 victories, overtaking arch rivals Zamalek who won 26 games in the 1974-75 season.

Their Moroccan striker Walid Azaro was the highest scoring foreigner in a single term, having netted 18 goals to finish as the competition's top scorer.

However, Ahly finished their impressive season on a low note, having slumped to their first Cairo derby loss to Zamalek in the league since 2007.

They also exited the Egypt Cup at the quarter-final stage after a shock loss to modest Assiouty Sport and could only collect a solitary point from their opening two African Champions League games. The poor results prompted coach Hossam El-Badry to step down.

Ismaily's second-place finish

Ismaily booked an African Champions League spot for the first time in eight years after finishing second behind champions Ahly.

They got the job done in a crucial encounter against Masry, their direct challengers for a runners-up spot, in May after holding their neighbours to a 1-1 draw.

The result ensured Ismaily would play in next year's Champions League for the first time since 2010 when they finished third in their group behind Algeria's JS Kabylie and Egyptian rivals Ahly.

At one point in the season, Ismaily were seen as genuine challengers to Ahly but the sudden resignation of French coach Sebastien Desabre, who took over at Uganda's national team, in December had a damaging effect on their prospects.

A poor run of results followed but they at least managed to hold onto their second place under the guidance of Portuguese coach Pedro Barny.

Zamalek demise

Zamalek had a league season to forget, with their plethora of new recruits failing to gel into the team quickly enough for the team to mount a serious title challenge.

The new arrivals' lack of experience cost Zamalek dearly as they lost nine times and drew seven matches to finish a distant fourth, failing to qualify for the prestigious African Champions League.

They started the season under Montenegrin coach Nebojsa Jovovic but he was sacked after five months, with a run of four defeats and as many draws dropping them nine points off the pace at the halfway stage of the season.

Jovovic's successor Ehab Galal sparked a mini revival after a shaky start but his tenure ended in disappointment after he was fired in April following three consecutive losses.

Zamalek returned to winning ways under interim boss Khaled Galal, who led them to their first league win over Ahly in 11 years and ensured the team would finish the season on a high note after clinching the Egypt Cup title following a penalty shootout victory over Smouha in the final.

Exploits of foreigners

The foreign players had a great impact on the Egyptian league this season, with the top three scorers coming from Morocco, Ghana and Colombia respectively.

Walid Azaro of Ahly made history by becoming the most prolific foreigner in a single season with 18 goals, followed by Ghanaian John Antwi of Maqassa (16 goals) and Ismaily's Colombian striker Diego Calderon (14 goals).

Congolese Kabongo Kasongo was also the top scorer of Zamalek, netting 10 goals. Masry's towering Burkinabe frontman Aristide Bance also made a notable impact despite his disciplinary problems, notching eight goals.

In deeper positions, Nigerian Junior Ajayi was one of Ahly's top performers, scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists for the title-winning side.

Masry rise

Masry continued their improvement under coach Hossam Hassan, Egypt's all-time leading scorer.

They finished third behind Ahly and Ismaily after another convincing campaign, one position better than last season. They also challenged Ismaily for the second spot all the way.

Masry, who finished two points ahead of fourth-placed Zamalek, will play in next season's African Confederation Cup.

They have made a fine start to this season's Confederation Cup group stage, collecting four points from their opening two matches.
