Marwan Mohsen, often criticised for a number of below-par displays, stole the limelight with a double salvo as Ahly strolled to a 2-0 win over Talae El-Geish for their third consecutive Egyptian Premier League win on Sunday.

The 29-year-old scored two goals in quick succession in the first half to ease pressure on his shoulders after he was vilified by Ahly's fans for some uninspiring displays lately.

He could have completed a hat-trick in the second half after he stepped up to take a penalty, but his tame shot was blocked by the keeper.

Mohsen took his tally to four league goals as Ahly maintained their recent mini-revival, having chalked up three wins after suffering two consecutive losses.

They moved up to fifth in the table with 20 points but they will only be three points short of leaders and arch rivals Zamalek if they win their three rescheduled games. El-Geish are ninth on 18 points.

Ahly winger Ahmed El-Sheikh almost opened the scoring as early as the eighth minute when he was picked out unmarked by a neat pass but his weak effort was saved by the keeper's legs with the goal at his mercy.

Mohsen made amends on 29 minutes, side-footing home into an empty net after some fine individual work from winger Mohamed Sherif, who bamboozled his marker on the left hand side of the area before squaring the ball to the Egyptian international.

He made it 2-0 just two minutes later, finding an empty net again after a shot from Sherif was parried into his path.

Ahly eased off after the break but El-Geish hardly took advantage, although they had a goal harshly disallowed for offside through substitute striker Ahmed Gaafar.

At the other end, Ahly's left-back Ayman Ashraf had a fierce volley smothered by the keeper and El-Sheikh hit the side netting when well-positioned to score.

Mohsen's wasted penalty was the only other highlight in the second half as Ahly ran out comfortable winners.
