The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Wednesday that the local league would stop on 3 June before the start of the African Cup of Nations, which will be held in Egypt from 21 June to 19 July.

"The local league is going to stop on 3 June whether it will have finished or if it needs to be completed after the African Cup of Nations, and this is to allow needed time for the national team to prepare for the tournament," the EFA posted on their official Facebook page.

The decision was reached after the EFA president Hany Abo Rida met with Javier Aguirre, the coach of the Egyptian National football team, Amer Hussein, the head of the competitions committee.

The EFA competitions committee have not announced yet whether all the league's remaining games could be played before the kick off of the African cup.

League teams are currently finishing games in the 25th matchday out of 34 matchdays.
