Egyptian club Wadi Degla announced on Tuesday they would part ways with Greek coach Takis Gonias amicably after Monday's 3-0 league loss to rivals Masry.

"The board decided to thank Gonias for his efforts during his year-and-a-half stint, which witnessed a clear effort from him in developing the team's performance," reads a short statement published on the club's Twitter account.

"Both sides agreed to part ways amicably. We wish the coach the best of luck in his next step," the statement added.

Gonias, 48, took charge of Degla in July 2018 and quickly managed to make a huge difference to their performance.

He was regarded as one of the best coaches in the Egyptian League especially for his football possession strategy, but unfortunately the teams' results were frustrating.

The Degla coach was known for being a big fan for Manchester City's coach Pep Guardiola as he frankly said few months after his appointment: "I am trying to apply the same strategy of Pep Guardiola. I like the coaches who can develop the performance of their players and also deliver interesting football like Guardiola and Maurizio Sarri."

The former Olympiacos player guided Degla for 54 matches during his time in charge, winning just 15, drawing in another 15, and losing the remaining 24.

Under the helm of Gonias, Degla ended the Egyptian Premier League in the tenth place last season. The team currently lie in 17th place in the domestic competition with 14 points from 17 matches, 28 points behind leaders Ahly.
