Ahly midfielder Hamdi Fathi has tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, becoming the club's first case since the club resumed training earlier this month, Ahly's football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz told local media.

Fathi has been out of action since November after sustaining a serious knee injury during a Pharaohs training camp and he resumed training earlier this month after being fully recovered.

Fathi's injury comes in an alarming week as several players in different clubs have tested positive for COVID-19 including 18 players from El-Entag El-Harby.

The 26-year-old joined Ahly in January 2019, helping the club win the league title last season.

Ahly players underwent five PCR tests so far before discovering Fathi 's case on Thursday.

Last month, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) gave the clubs the green light to resume training on July after a four-month suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic as a preparation for the domestic league restart .

Clubs are ordered to undergo PCR tests for their players to ensure that they are free of the virus.

The domestic league is set to be resumed on the sixth of August with a rescheduled between Zamalek and Masry.

Ahly are leading the league table with 49 points from 17 games, while perennial rivals Zamalek lie fourth with 31 points from 16 games.
