Ahly's Nigerian forward Junior Ajayi will be sidelined for up to three months after picking up an ankle injury, the club's football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz said on Sunday.
Ajayi sustained the injury during Ahly's dramatic 2-1 victory over bitter Cairo rivals Zamalek in the African Champions League final last month.
"It's an ankle injury; it has nothing to do with Achilles. He will need between two and three months of treatment," Abdel-Hafiz told Ahly's television channel following the 3-1 victory over Maqassa in their opening Egyptian Premier League game.
Playmaker Nasser Maher, who returned to Ahly after spending last season on loan at Smouha, could also face a long spell on the sidelines after appearing to dislocate his shoulder against Maqassa.
Ajayi, who can operate as a striker, winger or deep-lying forward, has been one of Ahly's key players since joining in the summer of 2016.
He scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions last season as Ahly won a remarkable treble (the league, Egypt Cup and Champions League titles).
