Coup attempt leaves Cairo giants Ahly stranded in Malian capital Bamako after the team's African Champions League clash with Stade Malian

Egypt's Foreign Ministry is in touch with the Ahly squad stranded in Mali since a military coup in the country Monday, according to a spokesman at the ministry.

"Egypt's embassy in the Malian capital of Bamako is currently arranging their return and that of other Egyptians in the country," Amr Roshdy said Tuesday.

Ahly were playing their first leg in the CAF Champions League Sunday against Stade Malian in which they were defeated 1-0.

“All of the players and the technical staff members are ok but we keep hearing continued gunfire sounds around our hotel,” goalkeeping coach Ahmed Nagy told the club’s official TV channel on Monday night.

The Cairo-based club chairman Hassan Hamdy announced that he is in contact with the team at the moment and was trying to send a private plane to bring them back to Egypt.
