Port Said disaster

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have received an official letter from Masry team in Port Said informing them that the club will not participate in the next football season.

“We will skip the 2012-2013 season, and will not play League or Cup football, in respect for the feelings of the families of Ahly’s martyrs. We will take part in the season after, when the circumstances become better,” the Port Said-based club said.

The coastal club mentioned that most of their players were loaned following EFA sanctions, and they are still without a manager after Hossam Hassan quit his post.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) lifted the sanctions imposed on Masry Tuesday.

The club was banned by the EFA for two seasons and demoted to the second division after supporters invaded the pitch to confront Ahly’s visiting contingent in a league game, sparking violence that left more than 70 fans dead and hundreds injured.
