The Egyptian Premier League could be resumed next month, Egyptian Football Association Chairman Samir Zaher said Friday.

The premier domestic competition has been suspended since January’s popular uprising that forced former President Hosni Mubarak to step down on 11 February.

Egyptian clubs, most of whom are already suffering from persistent financial problems, said they hope the league would kick-start as soon as possible to avoid more losses.

“I suggested that we resume the league activities next month and hold two rounds behind closed doors,” Zaher told Reuters.

“The EFA and clubs unanimously agree that it is very important to restart the competition because any cancellation will lead to dire financial consequences for all parties.”

Hassan Sakr, head of the Egyptian National Sports Council, said Thursday he would meet representatives from all Premier League clubs on Saturday to discuss the possible resumption of the league.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which is ruling Egypt on a temporary basis following the departure of Mubarak, would give a green light to resume the popular competition, given security concerns in the country.
